Sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical developed and produced by the Khlopin Radium Institute. It contains the technetium-99m radionuclide, which is a metastable nuclear isomer that decays by emitting gamma radiation with a principal energy of 140 keV, making it ideal for scintigraphy and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging. The pertechnetate ion (TcO4-) is a monovalent anion that shares similar biological transport mechanisms with iodide, specifically being concentrated in the thyroid gland, salivary glands, and gastric mucosa via the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS). It is used clinically for the diagnostic imaging of various organs, including the thyroid, brain, and salivary glands, and for the detection of ectopic gastric mucosa (Meckel's diverticulum). Additionally, it serves as the primary precursor and starting material for the preparation of a wide range of other technetium-99m labeled radiopharmaceuticals through the use of specialized reaction kits.
