**Sodium phosphate** is an inorganic phosphate salt preparation, commonly supplied as a defined mixture of monobasic sodium phosphate and dibasic sodium phosphate. Its clinical use depends on formulation and route: oral tablet or solution products act as hyperosmotic saline laxatives for colon cleansing before colonoscopy; rectal enemas are used for short-term relief of occasional constipation and bowel evacuation; and diluted intravenous sodium phosphates injection provides phosphate for prevention or correction of hypophosphatemia in patients with inadequate oral intake. In the intestine, poorly absorbed sodium and phosphate ions increase luminal osmotic load, retain water, and induce evacuation. Oral bowel-preparation products carry important risks of dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and rare acute phosphate nephropathy, particularly in susceptible patients.
