## Overview\nSodium phosphate + sodium phosphate is an oral **inorganic salt combination** of monobasic and dibasic sodium phosphate used primarily as an **osmotic laxative / bowel cleansing agent**. It increases intraluminal osmotic load in the gastrointestinal tract, drawing water into the bowel and producing rapid catharsis and diarrhea to evacuate colonic contents before colonoscopy; liquid OTC products have also been marketed for relief of occasional constipation. Public labels identify approved prescription tablet products including **OsmoPrep** and **Visicol** for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy, and OTC oral saline laxative liquids containing dibasic sodium phosphate plus monobasic sodium phosphate have also been marketed. A key safety issue for oral sodium phosphate bowel preparations is **acute phosphate nephropathy** and associated electrolyte and renal toxicity risk, especially in susceptible patients.
