Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium phosphopentobarbital is a water-soluble prodrug that is metabolized by alkaline phosphatase into its active form, propofol. Propofol is a sedative-hypnotic agent that enhances the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system. This prodrug formulation aims to overcome the limitations of propofol's traditional lipid emulsion, such as injection pain and adverse reactions related to lipid metabolism. It is used for sedation during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as endoscopy, and for the induction of general anesthesia. It is considered a Class 1 innovative drug in China.
