Overview

Sodium phytate is the fully neutralized, water-soluble sodium salt of phytic acid (inositol hexakisphosphate), a naturally occurring compound found abundantly in plant tissues such as grains and seeds. It acts primarily as a chelating agent, binding multivalent metal ions (notably calcium, zinc, and iron), which helps stabilize formulations by preventing metal-catalyzed degradation. Sodium phytate is widely used as an antioxidant and preservative enhancer in cosmetics, foods, oral care products, and cleaning agents. In medicine, it has been explored for use in treating hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia due to its ability to bind calcium and phosphate ions[1][2][3][6][9]. Its mechanism of action centers on chelation—sequestering metal ions to inhibit oxidative processes or reduce mineral bioavailability. It also exhibits some skin benefits such as moisturizing effects and improving elasticity when used topically[8].
