Overview
This is a combination bowel preparation regimen used for cleansing the colon prior to diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy. The combination includes: 1. Sodium picosulfate: A stimulant laxative that increases intestinal motility. 2. Magnesium citrate: An osmotic laxative formed when magnesium oxide and citric acid are combined in water. 3. Polyethylene glycol (PEG): An osmotic laxative that draws water into the intestinal lumen. 4. Ascorbic acid: Added to PEG solutions to reduce the required volume while maintaining efficacy. This combination works through dual mechanisms - the stimulant action of sodium picosulfate and the osmotic effects of magnesium citrate and PEG with ascorbic acid - to produce watery diarrhea that effectively cleanses the bowel.
