Overview
This combination drug is a bowel cleansing regimen used primarily for colorectal cancer screening procedures such as sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. It consists of an oral component (Pico-Salax) and a rectal component (sodium phosphate enema). Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that is metabolized by colonic bacteria into an active metabolite, which stimulates peristalsis. Magnesium oxide and citric acid react in water to form magnesium citrate, an osmotic laxative that draws water into the bowel lumen. Sodium phosphate, administered rectally, acts as an additional osmotic agent to clear the distal colon. Together, these agents ensure thorough evacuation of the bowel to allow for clear visualization during endoscopic examination.
