Overview

Sodium propionate is the sodium salt of propionic acid, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA). It is primarily used as an antifungal agent and food preservative due to its ability to inhibit the growth of mold and some bacteria[1][2][4]. In pharmaceuticals, it has been used as an excipient (inactive ingredient) and was previously approved in Canada as an active ingredient in topical preparations for treating inflammation or injury of the cervix[5]. Its mechanism of action is mainly antimicrobial—acting by inhibiting microbial growth. Sodium propionate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory agencies such as the FDA for use in food products[4]. It may also have potential gastrointestinal protective activity[3].
