Sodium pyrophosphate, commonly utilized in its tetrasodium form (TSPP), is a versatile chemical compound used in clinical diagnostics, oral care, and nutritional science. In dentistry, it is a primary anti-calculus agent found in toothpastes; it works by sequestering calcium and magnesium ions in saliva, thereby inhibiting the mineralization of dental plaque into tartar (calculus) and assisting in the removal of extrinsic stains. In nuclear medicine, sodium pyrophosphate serves as a ligand for radiopharmaceuticals like technetium-99m (99mTc-PYP) and rhenium-188 (188Re-PYP). These complexes are used for bone scanning and the non-invasive diagnosis of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, as the pyrophosphate ligand has a high affinity for calcium deposits within damaged or abnormal tissues. Furthermore, it is employed as a solubilizing agent in food fortification to enhance the bioavailability of ferric iron in products designed to combat iron-deficiency anemia.
