**Sodium pyrophosphate + stannous chloride** is a pharmaceutical combination used in diagnostic radiopharmaceutical kits for preparing technetium (Tc-99m) labeled pyrophosphate for medical imaging. Stannous chloride acts as a reducing agent enabling technetium-99m to bind with pyrophosphate, forming Tc-99m pyrophosphate, which preferentially accumulates in areas of altered bone metabolism (osteogenesis) and damaged myocardium, facilitating bone and cardiac imaging[1][3][9][13]. The primary mechanism is the reduction of technetium to a lower oxidation state that allows chelation by pyrophosphate; the pyrophosphate-chelated technetium is then administered to the patient for gamma imaging. This combination is also sometimes referred to as "stannous pyrophosphate" after in situ reaction[2][4][15]. Used predominantly as a diagnostic aid, it is not pharmacologically active at imaging doses except as a facilitator of radiopharmaceutical formation[1][4][9].
