Overview

Sodium pyruvate nasal spray is a small molecule, non-steroidal, inhaled formulation developed primarily for the treatment of respiratory diseases. It acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, and hydrogen peroxide. This mechanism helps reduce inflammation in the airways and improve lung function. Sodium pyruvate is a naturally occurring metabolite involved in cellular energy production and has been shown to increase nasal nitric oxide levels, which may help combat infections. The drug has demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials for conditions including allergic rhinitis, COVID-19 (including long COVID), influenza virus infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and other interstitial lung diseases[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
