Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium r-alpha-lipoate (also known as sodium R-alpha-lipoate or Na-RALA) is a highly stable and bioavailable sodium salt form of R-alpha-lipoic acid (R-ALA), a naturally occurring organosulfur compound and potent antioxidant. Unlike free R-lipoic acid, which is highly unstable and prone to polymerization, the sodium salt form exhibits significantly enhanced water solubility, stability, and pharmacokinetic absorption, achieving much higher plasma concentrations in humans. It acts as a cofactor for key mitochondrial multienzyme complexes (such as pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase) involved in energy metabolism, and functions as a direct and indirect antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species, chelating transition metals, and regenerating other endogenous antioxidants like glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It is developed and manufactured by companies such as Shandong Jincheng Pharmaceutical Group and GeroNova Research, primarily as a nutraceutical/dietary supplement and pharmaceutical ingredient for the potential treatment of diabetic neuropathy, oxidative stress-related conditions, and cognitive decline.
