Overview

Sodium salicylate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and the sodium salt of salicylic acid. It acts primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis, which leads to its analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory effects[1][5][6]. Sodium salicylate may also activate mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), inducing apoptosis in cancer cells[1]. It is used as an alternative to aspirin for individuals sensitive to that drug and has been investigated for use in pain relief, fever reduction, inflammation control, and as a urinary tract analgesic[3][5]. Additionally, it exhibits bacteriostatic and fungicidal properties[4].
