Overview

Sodium selenate is an inorganic sodium salt containing selenium in the form of the selenate ion. It is used as a source of selenium in dietary supplements and has been investigated as a potential pharmaceutical agent. Mechanistically, sodium selenate acts as a specific activator (agonist) of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), leading to dephosphorylation of tau protein and reduction in hyperphosphorylated tau levels. This mechanism underlies its disease-modifying potential for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and temporal lobe epilepsy, where it has shown efficacy in reducing neurodegeneration, improving cognitive function, and decreasing seizure severity in preclinical models and early clinical trials[1][4][5][6][8]. Sodium selenate also has roles as an anticonvulsant and fertilizer.
