Overview

Sodium spirulan is a sulfated polysaccharide derived from the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis. It is a water-soluble macromolecule, often isolated as its sodium salt, with reported biological activities including antiviral, anticoagulant, and immunomodulatory effects. Mechanistically, it is known to inhibit viral replication by interfering with viral entry and adsorption, and to exhibit anticoagulant effects by targeting components of the coagulation cascade. Sodium spirulan is primarily studied as a bioactive extract in laboratory settings and is not an approved pharmaceutical agent. It has been investigated as a potential ingredient in nutraceuticals, functional foods, and as a health supplement for its possible beneficial effects in oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
