Sodium ST20 is an orally bioavailable small molecule short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) derivative developed by HemaQuest Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of hemoglobinopathies, specifically sickle cell anemia and beta-thalassemia. It functions as an epigenetic modulator that induces the expression of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) by inhibiting histone deacetylases (HDACs). By increasing HbF levels, Sodium ST20 aims to inhibit the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin (HbS) in patients with sickle cell disease and provide a functional substitute for deficient adult hemoglobin in patients with beta-thalassemia. The compound was evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to determine its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers, including assessments of food effects on its absorption.
