Overview

Sodium sulfate is an inorganic salt that functions primarily as an osmotic laxative. It is widely utilized in bowel-cleansing regimens prior to colonoscopy, often formulated in combination with other sulfate salts (potassium and magnesium) or polyethylene glycol (PEG). The compound works by creating an osmotic gradient that draws water into the intestinal tract, increasing liquid stool volume and promoting bowel evacuation. Additionally, sodium sulfate (often referred to as mirabilite or Glauber's salt in traditional medicine) is used topically to reduce edema and inflammation associated with fractures or pancreatitis. Research also suggests it may lower fecal pH, a potential risk factor for colorectal cancer, and influence hepatic insulin signaling and cholesterol metabolism through the modulation of FGF15 and AKT pathways.
