Sodium sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula Na2S. It is typically encountered as a colorless to yellow solid that is highly soluble in water, forming strongly alkaline solutions. Sodium sulfide and its hydrates are used primarily in industrial applications such as the pulp and paper industry, water treatment, textile processing, and chemical manufacturing (including rubber chemicals and sulfur dyes). In medicine, topical forms of sodium sulfide have been used over-the-counter for softening toenails to assist in trimming ingrown nails. When exposed to moisture or acids, it releases hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gas with anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective properties that has been investigated for potential cardioprotective effects; however, the clinical significance of these findings remains unclear[1][2][3][8].
