Overview

Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate is a water-soluble derivative of tanshinone IIA, the main active component extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Danshen)[2][3][5]. It has been approved in China for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and angina pectoris[2][4][8]. The drug exhibits multiple pharmacological activities including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic effects, and lipid-lowering properties[2][4]. Mechanistically, it acts as an inhibitor of store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), modulates various ion channels (Ca2+, K+, Cl-), and serves as a negative allosteric modulator/blocker of purinergic receptor P2X7[1][5]. It also regulates transcription factors such as NF-κB, Nrf2, Stat1/3, Smad2/3, Hif-1α and β-catenin to exert its effects on oxidative stress and inflammation[2][5].
