Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium taurocholate is the sodium salt of taurocholic acid, a naturally occurring conjugated bile acid formed by the conjugation of cholic acid with taurine. It acts as a physiological detergent, forming micelles that solubilize dietary lipids and fat-soluble vitamins to facilitate their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Pharmacologically, sodium taurocholate functions as a choleretic and cholagogue, stimulating bile secretion and flow. It is approved as a key component of normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) systems, such as the OrganOx metra® and TransMedics® Organ Care System (OCS™) Liver, where it is infused into the circulating perfusate to replenish bile salt levels and maintain hepatobiliary viability ex-vivo prior to liver transplantation. Additionally, it is widely used as a research reagent for protein solubilization, lipase activation, and in vitro dissolution testing.
