Sodium thiosulfate is an inorganic compound used as a medication primarily to treat acute cyanide poisoning and to reduce the risk of ototoxicity (hearing loss) associated with cisplatin chemotherapy, especially in pediatric patients. For cyanide poisoning, it is typically administered intravenously after sodium nitrite and acts as a sulfur donor for the enzyme rhodanese (cyanide sulfur transferase), facilitating the conversion of toxic cyanide into thiocyanate, which is much less toxic and excreted renally[4][5][6][8]. In the context of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity, sodium thiosulfate interacts with cisplatin to form inactive platinum species and may also increase intracellular antioxidant levels by boosting glutathione production, thereby reducing oxidative stress[2][3][5]. Sodium thiosulfate has also been used topically for certain skin conditions such as pityriasis versicolor[8].
