Overview
Valmed (sodium valproate) is an antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing medication developed and marketed by Med Manor Organics. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of epilepsy, manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, and the prophylaxis of migraine headaches. Sodium valproate works by stabilizing hyperexcitable neurons and calming overactive electrical activity in the brain. Its mechanism of action involves increasing the concentration and activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, by inhibiting GABA transaminase and succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase. Additionally, it blocks voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels, thereby suppressing repetitive high-frequency neuronal firing.
