Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Soficef is a branded generic oral antibiotic containing cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin. Marketed by Medicox Lifescience, it is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and acute bronchitis. The drug exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. This binding inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell wall instability and subsequent bacterial cell lysis. Soficef is typically available in a 200 mg tablet formulation for oral administration.
