Solanum malacoxylon is a homeopathic preparation derived from the leaves of the South American plant *Solanum glaucophyllum* (synonym *Solanum malacoxylon*). The plant is naturally rich in glycosides of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the active form of Vitamin D, which regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism. In grazing livestock, ingestion of the plant causes systemic calcinosis; however, in homeopathic medicine, specifically the 9CH centesimal dilution manufactured by Boiron, it is used for its purported ability to promote the resorption of pathological calcified deposits. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase II randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot trial in Spain, sponsored by the Fundación Sociedad Española de Médicos de Atención Primaria (SEMERGEN), for the treatment of calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. The primary therapeutic objective is the reduction of lesion area as measured by ultrasonography.
