Historically utilized in Ayurvedic medicine as a component of the "Dashamula" formulation for respiratory and inflammatory conditions, recent research has focused on its potential as an antineoplastic agent. Preclinical studies indicate that the extract induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells (specifically the MDA-MB-231 line) by modulating both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. This is achieved through the upregulation of pro-apoptotic factors such as BAX and caspases (CASP3, CASP8, CASP9) and the downregulation of the anti-apoptotic protein BCL2. Additionally, the extract demonstrates anti-metastatic potential by inhibiting the expression of matrix metalloproteinases MMP2 and MMP9. It has also shown synergistic effects when combined with melatonin, enhancing its anti-tumorigenic and anti-migratory properties.
