Overview

Solasodine is a steroidal alkaloid found in plants of the family Solanaceae, such as potatoes and tomatoes. It is the aglycone component of glycoalkaloids like solamargine and solasonine. While itself toxic at high doses, it has been studied for a range of pharmacological activities including anticancer, diuretic, antifungal, cardiotonic, antispermatogenetic, antiandrogenic, immunomodulatory, antipyretic and central nervous system effects[1][3]. Preclinical studies show that solasodine inhibits proliferation and invasion of various cancer cell lines (including colon, liver, breast—especially HER2-overexpressing—and lung cancers), possibly by downregulating matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) involved in tumor invasion[1][7][8]. It also exhibits CNS activity (antipyretic/anticonvulsant/memory enhancing), diuretic effects, hepatoprotective properties and more[1][3]. Commercially it is used as a precursor for synthesis of steroidal drugs such as corticosteroids and contraceptives[4]. Its mechanism in cancer appears to involve inhibition of cell proliferation/migration/invasion via modulation of MMPs and stemness markers; however its precise molecular targets are not fully defined[7][8].
