Overview

Solenopsis richteri, commonly known as the black imported fire ant, is the biological source for allergenic extracts used in the diagnosis and treatment of fire ant sting hypersensitivity. These extracts, derived from the ant's venom or whole body, contain potent allergens such as Sol r 2 (a venom protein) and various piperidine alkaloids. Clinically, the extract is employed in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitivity and in subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) to induce immunological tolerance. This desensitization process is critical for individuals at risk of systemic allergic reactions or anaphylaxis following stings. The venom of S. richteri exhibits significant allergenic cross-reactivity with that of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), allowing for broad protection in regions where both species or their hybrids are prevalent.
