Solifenacin is a small molecule antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) drug used to treat overactive bladder and neurogenic detrusor overactivity. It works as a competitive antagonist of muscarinic receptors, with the highest affinity for M3, M1, and M2 subtypes. By blocking these receptors—primarily the M3 receptor in the bladder—solifenacin inhibits involuntary contractions of the detrusor muscle, increasing bladder capacity and reducing symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence. Solifenacin is available as oral tablets (Vesicare) for adults with overactive bladder and as an oral suspension (Vesicare LS) for children aged 2 years or older with neurogenic detrusor overactivity[1][2][5][8]. The drug was developed by Astellas Pharma and received FDA approval in 2004[5].
