Overview

SoloVir ETS (Electrokinetic Transdermal System) is a drug-device combination product developed by Transport Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of herpes labialis (cold sores). It utilizes a proprietary iontophoretic technology to enhance the transdermal delivery of a 5% acyclovir gel formulation. The system consists of a reusable, battery-powered control unit and single-use disposable cartridges containing the medication. By applying a low-voltage electric current, the device facilitates the movement of acyclovir across the skin barrier, achieving significantly higher tissue concentrations compared to oral administration. Clinical trials demonstrated its efficacy in stopping the progression of cold sore episodes with high patient compliance. Although it showed promise in Phase 2 trials, the developer appears to have ceased operations, and the product is no longer in active development.
