Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Soloxolone methyl (SM) is a semisynthetic cyanoenone-bearing derivative of 18βH-glycyrrhetinic acid (a major metabolite of licorice root) with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antitumor properties. Developed by the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine and the N.N. Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, soloxolone methyl is formulated by Novochizol as an inhaled aerosol (Novochizol-Soloxolone methyl aerosol) using cross-linked chitosan nanoparticles. This formulation is designed to deliver the drug directly to the lungs to inhibit viral replication and reduce virus-induced lung inflammation, making it a candidate for the treatment of respiratory infections such as influenza and COVID-19. In oncology, soloxolone methyl induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and apoptosis in cancer cells, potentially through direct interaction with SERCA2 and GRP94.
