Overview
Soluble egg antigen of *Schistosoma japonicum* (Sj SEA) is a complex mixture of proteins and glycoproteins secreted by the eggs of the parasitic flatworm *Schistosoma japonicum*. It possesses potent immunomodulatory properties, primarily driving a Th2-biased immune response and promoting the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Sj SEA has been investigated in preclinical research for its potential therapeutic applications in suppressing transplant rejection (such as in skin transplantation models) and treating autoimmune or inflammatory conditions like type 2 diabetes, colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. However, it is also a major pathogenic factor in schistosomiasis, associated with liver fibrosis and potentially promoting colorectal cancer progression through the activation of oncogenic pathways.
