Soluble erythropoietin receptor is a recombinant protein consisting of the extracellular domain of the human erythropoietin receptor (EpoR), typically expressed in NSO cells and purified for research use[2][3]. It is a truncated, non-membrane-bound variant generated by alternative splicing, circulating in human plasma and serum. Its main biological property is to bind erythropoietin (EPO), potentially modulating EPO availability and activity by acting as a decoy receptor[1][3]. Although levels are correlated with erythropoiesis, the direct clinical function and therapeutic use are not established; its primary use today is as a research reagent. Mechanistically, the soluble receptor competes with membrane-bound EpoR for erythropoietin, potentially inhibiting EPO signaling and downstream STAT5, PI3K, IκB kinase, and HSP70 signaling cascades involved in cell survival and proliferation[1][3]. Recombinant forms are used to study EPO/EPOR interaction and to evaluate erythropoietic regulation and cytokine receptor function[1][3].
