Soluble IL-13Rα2-Fc is a recombinant fusion protein biologic consisting of the extracellular domain of the interleukin-13 receptor alpha 2 (IL-13Rα2) fused to the Fc region of human IgG1. Developed by Wyeth-Genetics Institute, it functions as a high-affinity decoy receptor that specifically binds and neutralizes interleukin-13 (IL-13). By sequestering circulating IL-13, the protein prevents the cytokine from interacting with its functional signaling receptor complex (comprising IL-13Rα1 and IL-4Rα), thereby blocking downstream pathological effects such as type 2 inflammation, mucus hypersecretion, and tissue fibrogenesis. This fusion protein has been extensively utilized in preclinical research to validate IL-13 as a therapeutic target in asthma, airway hyperreactivity, and hepatic fibrosis induced by Schistosoma mansoni infection.
