Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SoluPrep is a topical antiseptic solution developed by Solventum (formerly 3M Health Care) specifically for preoperative skin preparation to reduce the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs). The formulation typically contains a combination of 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). It utilizes a dual-action mechanism where the isopropyl alcohol provides rapid, broad-spectrum bactericidal activity by denaturing microbial proteins, while the chlorhexidine gluconate provides persistent antimicrobial activity by binding to and disrupting microbial cell membranes. This persistence ensures that the surgical site remains protected from microbial recolonization for several hours, even in the presence of organic matter like blood or serum. SoluPrep is frequently evaluated in clinical trials for its comparative effectiveness and persistence against other standard-of-care antiseptics like ChloraPrep.
