Solvent-detergent plasma (SDP) is a pooled, pathogen-inactivated human plasma product developed to provide a safer alternative to single-donor fresh frozen plasma (FFP). The manufacturing process involves treating pooled plasma from multiple donors with a solvent (tri-n-butyl phosphate) and a detergent (Triton X-100 or Octoxynol-9) to irreversibly disrupt the lipid envelopes of viruses such as HIV, HBV, and HCV. This process also standardizes the levels of coagulation factors and neutralizes many leukocyte-derived antibodies, significantly reducing the risk of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). SDP is primarily used for the replacement of multiple coagulation factor deficiencies, such as those encountered in liver disease, cardiac surgery, or massive hemorrhage, and for the treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam has specifically investigated its efficacy in managing procedure-related coagulation disorders during pediatric cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease.
