Overview

Somapacitan is a long-acting, recombinant human growth hormone analog developed for the treatment of adults and children with growth hormone deficiency. It features a single amino acid substitution (L101C) in the backbone to which an albumin-binding moiety is attached, prolonging its half-life and allowing for once-weekly subcutaneous dosing instead of daily injections. Somapacitan binds to the dimeric growth hormone receptor on target cells, activating intracellular signaling pathways that result in both direct effects (such as muscle fiber growth and chondrocyte proliferation) and indirect effects mediated by increased production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), primarily in the liver. These actions help normalize body composition by decreasing fat mass and increasing lean body mass, as well as restoring metabolic function in patients with growth hormone deficiency[1][3][6][7].
