Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Somatoline is a topical pharmaceutical product developed by Società Italo Britannica L. Manetti - H. Roberts & C. per Azioni for the treatment of edematous fibrosclerotic panniculopathy, commonly known as cellulite. The pharmaceutical formulation typically contains a combination of **levothyroxine** (a synthetic thyroid hormone) and **escin** (a mixture of saponins derived from horse chestnut). Levothyroxine is intended to stimulate metabolic activity and lipolysis in subcutaneous adipose tissue by acting as an agonist at thyroid hormone receptors, while escin provides anti-edematous and vasoprotective effects by reducing capillary permeability and improving microcirculation. A Phase 2 clinical study was conducted to evaluate the systemic bioavailability, safety, and local tolerability of a new gel formulation to ensure that repeated cutaneous application does not lead to significant systemic absorption of the active ingredients, particularly levothyroxine.
