Somatrem is a recombinant human growth hormone analogue used primarily to treat pediatric patients with growth failure due to growth hormone deficiency, idiopathic short stature, Turner syndrome, and chronic kidney disease up to the time of renal transplantation. It is also indicated for adults with childhood-onset or adult-onset growth hormone deficiency. Somatrem differs from endogenous human growth hormone (somatropin) by the addition of a methionyl amino acid residue at its N-terminus. The drug acts by binding to dimeric growth hormone receptors on target tissues, initiating intracellular signaling that leads to increased production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which mediates many of its anabolic and metabolic effects such as skeletal growth and protein synthesis[1][3][5]. Somatrem was marketed under the brand name Protropin but has been discontinued in several markets including the United States[4].
