Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Somatropin depot is a long-acting formulation of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), designed for subcutaneous injection once or twice monthly. The product consists of micronized particles of rhGH embedded in biocompatible, biodegradable polylactide-coglycolide (PLG) microspheres. After injection, bioactive rhGH is released from the microspheres by diffusion and polymer degradation. The amino acid sequence is identical to pituitary-derived human growth hormone. Somatropin acts as an agonist at the growth hormone receptor, stimulating tissue growth and metabolism in patients with endogenous growth hormone deficiency or conditions associated with impaired growth[3][4][6]. It was primarily indicated for pediatric patients with inadequate endogenous GH secretion.
