Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Sominex** is a non-specific, market-dependent over-the-counter sleep-aid brand rather than one chemically uniform drug. In the United States, Sominex is an oral diphenhydramine hydrochloride product for temporary relief of occasional sleeplessness; diphenhydramine is a first-generation antihistamine with sedating central H1-receptor-antagonist activity. U.S. products include 25 mg original-formula tablets and 50 mg Sominex Max tablets. Separately, the Brazilian product Sominex Composto is an herbal medicinal product containing dry extracts of valerian, hawthorn, and passionflower, indicated as a mild sedative and adjunct for insomnia associated with anxiety.
