Sonias

Sonias is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing the thiazolidinedione **pioglitazone hydrochloride** and the sulfonylurea **glimepiride**. Developed by Takeda, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients who do not achieve adequate glycemic control with monotherapy. Pioglitazone functions as a potent and selective agonist for the **peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma)**, which regulates the transcription of genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism, thereby increasing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and reducing hepatic glucose output. Glimepiride acts as an insulin secretagogue by binding to and closing the **ATP-sensitive potassium channels** on the pancreatic beta-cell membrane, leading to cell depolarization and subsequent insulin release. By addressing both insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion, Sonias provides a multi-mechanistic approach to improving hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels.
