Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sonic hedgehog peptide amphiphile (SHH-PA) is a preclinical-stage therapeutic formulation consisting of recombinant Sonic hedgehog (SHH) protein encapsulated within a self-assembling peptide amphiphile nanofiber hydrogel. Developed primarily by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, SHH-PA is designed for localized, sustained delivery of SHH to the cavernous nerve and penile tissue. It is being investigated as a regenerative treatment to prevent or treat erectile dysfunction (ED) resulting from cavernous nerve injury (such as during radical prostatectomy) or diabetic neuropathy. By delivering SHH, the hydrogel suppresses smooth muscle apoptosis in the corpora cavernosa, promotes cavernous nerve regeneration, and prevents penile remodeling and fibrosis.
