SOP-007 is a synthetic peptide designed to mimic the biological activity of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor-AA (PDGF-AA), acting as a selective agonist for the Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor alpha (PDGFRα). Developed by Sosei Heptares, the drug was primarily investigated for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA), the advanced dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapeutic rationale is based on the role of PDGFRα signaling in maintaining the health and survival of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and the choriocapillaris; activation of this pathway is thought to protect these tissues from oxidative stress and degeneration. SOP-007 was administered via intravitreal injection and reached Phase 1/2a clinical trials, where it demonstrated safety and tolerability, but development was subsequently discontinued by the sponsor.
