Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sopaniyakhana extract is a traditional Thai polyherbal formulation composed of seven dried plants: the rhizomes of *Cyperus rotundus*, *Zingiber officinale*, *Plumbago indica*, *Curcuma longa*, *Aucklandia lappa*, and *Acorus calamus*, and the leaves of *Cnesmone javanica*. It is being investigated by researchers at Mahidol University and the University of Phayao for its potential therapeutic application in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity. Preclinical studies indicate that the extract reduces hepatic lipid accumulation by suppressing lipogenesis (via downregulation of PPARG and FASN) and promoting fatty acid oxidation (via upregulation of PPARA, FXR1, and CPT-1). Beta-asarone, isolated from the extract, has been identified as a major active component that enhances the induction of PPARA and CPT-1.
