Sophora flavescens + Angelica sinensis is a combination of two traditional Chinese herbal ingredients, often used together in decoctions or extracts for their synergistic effects. This combination is most notably used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-tumor, and immune-modulating properties in both in vitro and in vivo models. Mechanistically, the pair exerts effects through inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators (such as NF-κB, IL-1β, TNF-α, iNOS, ICAM-1, COX-2), reduction of oxidative stress, inhibition of tumor growth, and modulation of apoptosis-related genes (such as bax/bcl-2 balance). Major active components include oxymatrine (from Sophora flavescens) and sodium ferulate (from Angelica sinensis), which act synergistically to down-regulate inflammatory cytokines and promote anti-tumor and neuroprotective effects[1][2][3][4][7]. It is commonly applied orally as a decoction, and more recently, novel delivery forms (e.g., microneedles) are being explored for skin disease and psoriasis models[1][6].
