Overview

Sophora flavescens Aiton topical ointment is an investigational herbal therapy developed by En Chu Kong Hospital for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). The formulation is derived from the root of *Sophora flavescens* (known as Ku Shen in traditional Chinese medicine), which contains bioactive alkaloids such as matrine and oxymatrine. These compounds are recognized for their anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antimicrobial properties. The ointment is designed to provide a safer alternative to conventional first-line treatments like topical corticosteroids, which are often associated with adverse effects such as skin atrophy and telangiectasia during long-term use. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to assess its efficacy in reducing skin lesions and symptoms in patients with mild to severe atopic dermatitis.
