Overview
Soraprazan is a small molecule potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) that acts as a potent, reversible, and fast-acting inhibitor of the gastric H,K-ATPase (proton pump). While initially developed for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), where it reached Phase 2 clinical trials, the drug is currently being repurposed by Katairo GmbH for ophthalmic indications. Under the brand name Remofuscin, soraprazan is being investigated for its ability to remove lipofuscin from retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, which is a key pathological feature in Stargardt disease and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It has received orphan drug designation from the European Commission for Stargardt disease and has been evaluated in the Phase 2 STARTT proof-of-concept trial.
