Overview

Sorbolene is a non-proprietary emollient and moisturising cream widely used as a topical skin barrier and general-purpose moisturiser. It is officially registered in the British Pharmacopoeia as "Aqueous Cream BP" and consists primarily of hydrocarbon-based ingredients such as paraffin oil (liquid paraffin), white soft paraffin wax, mineral oil, purified water, emulsifying wax (often containing sodium lauryl sulfate), cetostearyl alcohol, chlorocresol (as preservative), and sometimes glycerine. Sorbolene acts by forming an oily layer on the skin surface to trap moisture within the epidermis. It is commonly used to treat or prevent dry skin conditions including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, xerosis (dryness), nappy rash in babies, minor irritations from shaving or radiation therapy burns. Its simple formulation makes it suitable for sensitive skin types since it typically lacks perfumes or colorants that may cause irritation[1][2][3][8]. Sorbolene does not have an active pharmacological mechanism but functions physically as a barrier to reduce transepidermal water loss.
