Overview

Sorghum bicolor subsp. bicolor pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of grain sorghum, a member of the Poaceae (grass) family. It is primarily used as a pharmaceutical agent for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity conditions, including allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and seasonal asthma. In diagnostic settings, the extract is applied topically or intradermally during skin prick testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitization. Therapeutically, it is used in allergen immunotherapy (AIT), where patients receive gradually increasing doses of the extract via subcutaneous injection. This process is designed to induce immunological tolerance by modulating the immune system's response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1-mediated or T-regulatory (Treg) profile, leading to the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies and reduced sensitivity to the allergen.
