Overview

Sorghum bicolor seed extract, specifically a methanolic crude extract derived from red sorghum (also known as great millet), is being investigated for its potential therapeutic role in treating diabetic nephropathy (DN) and related multi-organ dysfunction. Research conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, suggests that the extract targets the gut-kidney-bone axis by mitigating the toxic effects of gut-derived microbial metabolites. In vitro studies using HEK-293 (kidney) and MG-63 (osteosarcoma) cell lines have demonstrated that the extract significantly attenuates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and reduces apoptosis induced by specific biomarkers such as hydroxyphenyllactic acid and stearic acid. This antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activity highlights its potential as a novel candidate for managing diabetes-related complications.
